We express ourselves with words, but acrostic poetry is how words would express themselves if they could. Author and poet Joseph Macy combines the vintage craft of acrostic poetry with modern terms and sentiment.


Joseph Macy is a self-taught artist whose talent began to surface a few months after his 50th birthday when he began sculpting. Having spent most of his earlier years in the world of business, Joseph abandoned that hectic world and retired to the coastal mountains of Central Oregon. There he hand built a small log cabin, using old pioneer tools and felling his own trees in order to culminate a life long dream.

After moving into the cabin, his hands still “itched” to be doing something and seemingly, by accident, his sculpting began.  With an old stump for a sculpting table and the great outdoors for a studio, he began to reproduce an image of Black Belly, an old Cheyenne Warrior. He discovered that he had a here-to-fore unknown talent for sculpting portraits.

Suffering a very serious stroke in 2003, his clay sculpting career ended quite abruptly. Unwilling to adjust to a non-artistic life, he began to write, or as he puts it, “sculpt with words.”  To his surprise, sculpting with words is every bit as challenging as sculpting with clay.

Joseph was born in historic Oakland, Oregon but was raised in Portland, Oregon. In early 2000, he returned to the area of his birthplace and now resides in Sutherlin, Oregon.
